BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
Last fall professional artist Adam Davenport completed his third historical mural in the City of Saginaw. During subsequent discussions for possible future murals, it was suggested that a mural depicting a local celebrity be considered. LPGA Golfer Angela Stanford quickly came to mind. Ms. Stanford grew up in Saginaw. She graduated from Boswell High School and Texas Christian University. In addition to being a successful golfer, she formed her own non-profit foundation, The Angela Stanford Foundation in 2009. The foundation is an organization with a mission to serve children and young adults, particularly those that have been affected by cancer. She fits the definition of a hometown hero, and is deserving of the honor of a mural in Saginaw. In addition to her own accomplishments, Ms. Stanford's family has strong ties to the City. Nan Stanford, her mother, served as City Manager and retired in 2017 after 41 years of service. Steve, her father, served as Public Services Specialist and retired in 2014 after 24 years of service.
Mr. Davenport was presented with a photo of Ms. Stanford for a potential mural to be painted on the City's water tank located at the southern end of Willow Creek Park. The photo was taken in 2018 when Ms. Stanford won her first major title with a one stroke victory at the Evian Championship. Mr. Davenport's rendering of the proposed mural is attached. The total cost for the proposed mural will be $28,550.
