SUBJECT:
Staff Recognition – Saginaw Aquatic Center Personnel

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

In February 2021, the City of Saginaw Texas as well as most of the state of Texas suffered from a debilitating winter storm. The City of Saginaw was not the only municipality or residential pool that had damage.  Most, if not, all municipalities had damage and significant repairs to make.

Almost all municipalities across the State of Texas are short-staffed. They are either closed their facility for the season, opened with reduced staffing, reduced days and reduced hours or if multiple facilities, opened a reduced number of facilities. The City of Saginaw might be one of the only municipalities who opened with a full staff. The Saginaw Aquatic Center was closed for two years, one year (2020) because of the COVID-19 Pandemic and one year (2021) because of low-staffing levels. This year, we had to start from scratch by hiring and training 33 of the 36 staff.

Jennifer Blick was hired this summer as Aquatic Center Manager and has worked wonders with the staff. Our Aquatic Center staff is a superior staff who work together as a team. They are selfless employees who do what needs to be done even before it is asked. Your Aquatic Center employees have yet to experience very few days under 100 degrees.  In fact, they sat on-deck for three consecutive days in a row over 108+. They have performed countless saves, water rescues and have responded to medical issues, which is all part of their job.  They are literally “lifesavers”. They are also literally “first responders”.  In addition, they also have consistently received threats (verbal and almost physical), constant belittling, discrediting and are cussed out on a daily basis by adult patrons. They work very hard at a stressful job to make the City look good only to receive little to no respect from patrons.

Tonight, we want to shine a little light on our Aquatic Center staff.
