SUBJECT:
Action Regarding Approval of Funds for Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee Project – Irrigation/Sprinkler System for Flower Bed at Knowles/McLeroy Blvd.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

The Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee (KSB) has a very popular Adopt-A-Spot program that encourages citizen participation in beautification projects and litter clean-ups of designated public areas at regular intervals. A spot could be a road right-of-way, creek, and median, or City entryway monument sign. Individuals, organizations or businesses may agree to keep a designated spot cleared of litter and/or provide beautification for a period of one year.

There is currently a flowerbed on the Northwest corner of the Knowles/McLeroy Blvd. intersection.  This is a very visible and busy location not only in Willow Creek Park but also in the city.  It does have water access but only a water spigot/faucet.  Since no sprinkler system is present, a person or group wanting to adopt this spot would have to bring their own water hose to provide nourishment to the plants/flowers and this is a discouragement.

The KSB would like to have a sprinkler system installed to both help beautify that location and to encourage individuals/groups to adopt that spot.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The financial impact will be $1,220.  The work would be completed by Yellowstone Landscape (the City of Saginaw’s new right-of-way mowing contractor).

RECOMMENDATION:
The Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee is recommending the approval of $1,220 for Yellowstone Landscaping to install a sprinkler system in the flowerbed on the Northwest corner of the Knowles/McLeroy Blvd. intersection.
