BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
The 2019-20 Water Department budget included funding in the amount of $684,000 for the replacement of 50% of our water system water meters with cellular technology.
The City currently uses Badger Orion Classic transponders and water meters that allow remote reading capability for water customers. The system has performed well and has reduced or eliminated the need for manual meter reading. Unfortunately the city has been informed that the Orion Classic system is being phased out for the next generation of meter/reader. Badger will no longer support the Orion Classic system.
The recommended system is called the Badger Orion Cellular System. The new system has many advantages that will not only expedite the monthly meter reading but provide our customers transparency by giving them the ability to monitor their water account. There are approximately 7,600 meters in the City. The replacement of the water meters citywide will occur over two fiscal years.
The purchase will be made through Atlas Utility Supply, Badger’s distributor.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The total financial impact will be $684,000. Funds in the amount of $684,000 are budgeted for the replacement of meters (Water & Wastewater, Account 05-7000-50-00, Capital Outlay/Special Request).
RECOMMENDATION:
It is recommended that the City Council authorize the purchase of Badger Orion Cellular System water meters from Atlas Utility Supply in the amount of $684,000.
