SUBJECT: Consideration and Action to approve funds for “Art in the Community Program” Mural
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
Last year, the Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee (KSB) expanded their horizons by moving into the fine artistic beautification of Saginaw by including the Texas Flag/Welcome Mural on Ardent Mills as well as several additional projects in a few Saginaw parks. On October 15, 2019, the City Council approved a KSB Art Mural project with Adam Davenport. Adam painted a wonderful historic mural on the north side (southbound side) of the Northwest Plumbing Building capturing a historic Fire Department photo. The project was completed in January 2020 and has received rave reviews from both the public, as well as the owners of Northwest Plumbing. This mural project has drawn a overabundance of positive attention to Saginaw Texas.
Recently, KSB has been visiting again with Adam Davenport on another professional mural. This mural includes the artist’s rendering of a historic photo of Greene’s Grocery (that also includes a photo of Mr. & Mrs. Greene). If approved, this mural will be painted on the north side (southbound side) of JR’s Café, which is the original home of Greene’s Grocery.
KSM met and discussed this idea in February 202. They were set to vote on this item at the regularly scheduled meeting set for March 16, 2020, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. This item will be officially voted on at the upcoming KSB meeting on Monday, May 18, 2020. This potential project could begin in June 2020 and would take up to 3 weeks to complete.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is $10,000. Residents, via their monthly water bill, will fund this project from the Keep Saginaw Beautiful voluntary $1.00 donation.
RECOMMENDATION: The Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee is recommending the approval of $10,000 for Adam Davenport (professional artist) to paint a mural on the north side (southbound side) of the JR’s Café. |
