SUBJECT:
Consideration and action to approve funds for “Art in the Community Program” Mural in Highland Station Park

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

Last year, the Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee (KSB) expanded their horizons by moving into the fine artistic beautification of Saginaw.  Their first project began with the Texas Flag/Welcome Mural on Ardent Mills as well as several additional projects in a few Saginaw parks.  In October 2019, the City Council approved a Historic Art Mural project with Adam Davenport.  Adam painted a wonderful mural on the north side (southbound side) of the Northwest Plumbing Building capturing a historic Fire Department photo.  Recently, the City Council approved funding for another historic mural to be painted by Adam Davenport of a photo of Greene’s Grocery on the north side (southbound side) of JR’s Café, which is the original home of Greene’s Grocery.

KSB met and discussed the idea of another mural to be painted by local artist Erica Rosa on the exterior walls of the Highland Station Restroom in February 2020 and approved funding at their May 18, 2020 meeting.  This potential project could begin in June or early July 2020 and would take up to 1 week to complete.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:
The financial impact is $750.  Residents, via their monthly water bill, will fund this project from the Keep Saginaw Beautiful voluntary $1.00 donation.

RECOMMENDATION:
The Keep Saginaw Beautiful Committee is recommending the approval of $750 for Erica Rosa (professional artist) to paint a mural on the exterior walls of the Highland Station Park Restroom.
