BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
Sec. 7-2 of the Zoning Ordinance regulates the construction of carports. The section contains a defined “Carport Overlay District” where carports are allowed. Carports outside of the district are expressly prohibited.
The City is currently developing construction plans for the Central Fire Station at 700 W. McLeroy Boulevard. The plans propose to construct a carport in the rear of the property to protect emergency vehicles. The carports will help to prevent damage to the vehicles to maintain their responsiveness during times of emergency. It is expected that a similar need may exists with Police facilities. The ordinance is proposed to be amended to read as follows:
“Sec. 7-2. - Carport overlay district.
The city has established a carport overlay district wherein such carport may be allowed and expressly prohibits carports within any area outside of the carport overlay district with the exception of Public safety facility, police and fire, located in Community Facility (CF) zoning districts. Carports are permitted in the carport overlay district according to the regulations contained herein.”
The remaining provisions under Section 7-2 will remain unchanged.
The Planning and Zoning Commission considered the item at it's February 9, 2021 meeting and unanimously recommended approval.
